Since taking this class my writing abilities have improved tremendously. Through the usage of the class discussions and the critical writing assignments my writing ability has become more refined. Through the weekly discussions and the major writing assignments throughout this course I believe my writing has blossomed and become more concise. My writing has grown from basic descriptions to including noteworthy data and information that makes my writing only more powerful. Through the addition of scientific date, scientific language and being more concise my writing has only grown since the beginning of the semester. I have also learned how to incorporate scientific articles, online data bases and resource pools and scholarly articles.
The weekly discussions were paramount in helping me develop as a writer. For the discussions I not only had to formulate our own thoughts I also had to reply to my classmates and peers. Although each one of classmates had a different level in the usage of scientific language, there was enough common ground for us to understand each other. For the weekly discussions I had to formulate ideas and thoughts that not only made rational sense but also made my peers think more about what I had wrote. I would have to defend my writings while they brought about their own opinions. One of the many things we had to do for this class was read a large amount of scientific journal and comprehend what we were reading. One of the best tools we, as students, had was to skim through the readings and highlight important sections that we could make usage of in our own writings.
Besides the weekly discussions posts we also had three major writing assignments that helped us grow as writers and scientific students. The writings had to have a clear outline, goals that are to be accomplished and make usage of formal and scientific language. Since there was a clear outline and goals being laid out for me to meet, I had to meet them, and I did. My papers were clearly outlined with what I would be discussing in my paper. For example, in the scientific controversy paper I wrote about how a large population of people believe corona is a hoax and that it isn’t real. In my paper I break down how it is not a hoax and very real. The same thing was done for the research paper where, along with a few classmates, I argued for greater usage of nuclear power. For all of these papers we had to utilize resources such as scientific journals, research papers, news articles and more. For all the papers and especially the research paper I used an extended amount of resources ranging from scientific articles to news articles and properly made usage of them.
The multitude of weekly assignments paired with the lengthy writing assignments were great in helping me become a better writer. Through the weekly discussions I learned to formulate more stimulation thoughts in my peers. Along with stimulating their own thoughts, they also stimulated my own since I had to reply to what they stated and state my own opinion. In the beginning my responses to the weekly discussions were not as string and stimulating, but as the course continued my writing expanded and inspired more thinking. By the last week of the course my writing was complex and stimulating.
One of the main things I learned throughout this course was to properly use scientific language in a manner that even the common person would understand it. The usage of scientific language is something I did not fully grasp to such a high degree; I would mainly use words everyone knew of. With this course I learned how to use even more complex terms, use scientific formulas to help demonstrate the meaning of the word and break it down even further. The research paper helped me learn to use more complex scientific terminology that you would see in a research paper and use more resources outside of news articles.
Over the course of this class my writing has improved quite a lot. I have learned to strengthen my own opinion by using my writing to strengthen my opinion. My writing not only makes the person want to agree with, but they also highly consider my opinion in the area. Through the usage of colloquial writing, my work becomes easier for a person to read and comprehend, while the usage of scientific language helps to make my points firmer. My writing caters to both the common student and students of science; the colloquial language makes my writing easy to comprehend for the common student and my usage of scientific language and terms and formulas helps the scientist student understand my point. This class has greatly helped me improve my writing abilities and helped me grow as a student of the sciences.
